Her passion for discovering what catches the eye and constructing a well-composed photograph is evident throughout her body of work. Working with light, color and creative digital editing transforms each of her photographs into a unique statement. Esther found her love of photography at Helix High School in La Mesa, California at the age of sixteen. She later took classes at Grossmont College while working as a photographer for Glamour Shots Studios. For the next eighteen years she traveled and raised three children, one adopted from Vietnam, and undertook charitable work with orphanages and feeding the homeless. Returning to her camera in 2010, her artwork took on a new direction photographing a wide range of subjects from landscapes to dive bars. From those, she created a line of products through her latest venture, Eyes of Esther™ Photography. Esther recently opened the Main Street 5 Gallery in El Cajon and is busy making it a place for her fellow artists to share their own visions and dreams. It’s about 8:00 pm on Friday August 20th and she had been standing and mingling for the past three hours during her first photo exhibition held at the newly opened Park Place Café on E. Main Street in Downtown El Cajon. She kept looking around the room filled with her beautiful photography and would humbly shake her head in disbelief. “I just can’t believe all of this is happening; it’s like a dream come true.” Esther Beish stands proudly by her work at her first photo exhibition at Park Place Café Her photographic journey began at Helix High School when she was only 16 years old and continued into her college years where she studied the art in more depth with a variety of classes. After working as a photographer for Glamour Shots, she decided people were not going to be her subjects. At the time photography was just a hobby and not anything worth pursuing. It got set aside for many years until just earlier this year, when she decided to take a shot at it again, literally. What started as a shot quickly became a realized passion, and the next thing she knew, Beish had a huge collection of portraits piling up at her house. Her good friend Mike Salizar walked in one day, saw her photography and was amazed. He told her she needed to enter her work into the Del Mar Fair. Beish disagreed. “They receive over 40,000 entries every year; there was no way my stuff was good enough to be entered into the Fair.” When Beish’s colorful photograph of a bridge at Flinn Springs Park was not only accepted into the fair, but also received an honorable mention for color manipulation, there was a turning point and her own eyes were opened. “After that moment, I realized I just might have something here,” she shared. This photograph received an honorable mention for color manipulation at the Del Mar Fair this year Shortly thereafter Beish crossed paths with Park Place Café Owner Annette Spadafore. Spadafore said they hadn’t even opened the Café doors and were still in the process of remodeling when Beish walked in and introduced herself. “She noticed our empty walls and asked us what we were going to do to decorate. We didn’t have anything planned yet so she offered her photographs. The very next day she drove by and dropped off piles of her matted and framed work and told us to use what we wanted.” Patrons of Park Place Café now enjoy seeing a variety of Beish’s work on the walls that gets rotated often due to frequent purchases. These postcards were a popular way for many to take home and enjoy Beish’s photography Never intending to make a career out of her photography, Beish is still very modest with her work and requires a little push from her friends every now and then to take the next step. One of her recent moves was developing post cards out of her photos, which were popular sellers at her exhibition. Long time friend Diane Hinojosa, who helped hostess the event, describes Beish’s style as taking the ordinary and making it unique. “Esther’s extremely talented; she helps you see things you wouldn’t normally think were beautiful.” Beish is still taking one day at a time but has already considered opening a gallery one day or using her photography for charity events to help the homeless, an area she feels particularly drawn to.
